Billet Family Program

Billet families are the cornerstone of junior hockey organization. The off ice MVP’s.

Behind every successful hockey team is a group of people whose impact never appears on the scoresheet. Billet families open more than just the door to their home—they open their hearts to young athletes chasing their dreams.

For many players, living away from home is one of the biggest challenges they’ll face. Billet families provide a safe place to live, home-cooked meals, encouragement after tough losses, and someone to celebrate the victories with. They become mentors, role models, and a source of comfort during a season filled with highs, lows, and countless miles away from family.

The bond between a player and their billet family often lasts far beyond a single season. Lifelong friendships are formed, holiday traditions are shared, and players become part of the family. The care, patience, and support that billet families provide allow athletes to focus on growing—not only as hockey players, but as young men.

A billet families’ generosity helps build champions on the ice and outstanding people off it.

Simply put, billet families don’t just support a hockey team—they help make it possible.

FAQ’s

What is a billet family?

A billet family provides a Brooks Bandits player with a safe, welcoming home during the hockey season. More than just a place to stay, billet families offer support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging while players pursue their hockey and educational goals.

Who are the players?

Brooks Bandits players are dedicated student-athletes, typically between the ages of 16 and 20, who come from across Canada, the United States, and around Europe. They are committed to developing both on and off the ice while striving toward collegiate and professional levels. For some players, this will be their first time away from home, living in a new city, or even new country.

How long will my player stay with me?

Players typically arrive in early September and stay through the end of the hockey season and playoffs.

What if I have children or pets?

That’s absolutely fine! Many Brooks Bandits billet families have children, pets, or both. Players often become positive role models and valued members of the household.

Can I be a Temporary Billet?

Yes. We welcome families that are interested in becoming temporary Billets. Temporary Billets are highly valued during Training Camp when roster sizes are high, and also to accommodate player movement/trades, as well as temporary relief when billets are away from their home for an extended period.

Can I host more than one player?

Yes. Families with the appropriate space may choose to host two players. The Brooks Bandits will work with you to ensure it’s a good fit for everyone involved.

What happens if there is a problem?

Communication is key. If any concerns arise, the Brooks Bandits coaching staff and billet coordinator are available to help resolve issues and support both the player and the billet family.

Can I choose the player who billets with us?

The Brooks Bandits carefully match players and billet families based on personalities, lifestyles, allergies, and household dynamics whenever possible. We strive to create the best possible fit.
