BROOKS, AB – The Brooks Bandits are proud to announce the signing of 2009-born defenceman Zachary Spurgeon for the 2026-27 BCHL season.
The 16-year-old was a standout defenceman last season with Northstar Christian Academy in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Spurgeon is known for his speed, hockey IQ and ability to move the puck efficiently.
“We’re extremely excited to welcome Zachary and the Spurgeon family to our organization. Zachary is a young, high-end talent who brings tremendous upside to our group, and just as importantly, he and his family align extremely well with the culture and values we have built here in Brooks,” said Bandits General Manager Wayne Labrie.
The Spurgeon name will be familiar to NHL and Minnesota Wild fans, as Zachary is the son of longtime Wild captain Jared Spurgeon.
“With the BCHL’s move toward independence and its continued focus on high-end player development, hockey families have more freedom to choose the path and environment they believe best fits their child’s development,” said Labrie.
Despite having several options when deciding where to begin his junior hockey career, Spurgeon ultimately chose the Brooks Bandits because of the organization’s proven track record of individual player development, commitment to education and eventual pathway to NCAA hockey.
The Brooks Bandits would like to welcome Zachary and the entire Spurgeon family to the organization and the Brooks community.
