Lalonde scores game winner, Bandits beat Saints 2-1 in shootout in wild Saturday showdown

BROOKS, AB (March 23, 2024) – Hockey fans were treated to a hard-fought, exciting game on Saturday at the Centennial Regional Arena, as the Brooks Bandits defeated the Spruce Grove Saints 2-1 in a shootout.

Goaltender Sam Scopa (Lexington, MA) made 22 saves, while Logan Sawyer scored the lone Brooks goal in the 2nd period. The Bandits (55-5-1) improved to 30-0 at home this season and 14-1-1 in the BCHL.

The first period was scoreless, highlighted by a Scopa save on an Ethan Sundar breakaway.

The first goal came at 10:37, as the Bandits failed to clear on a penalty kill , and Sundar scored forehand from the left circle. The Bandits tied the game 1-1 at 16:29, as Lalonde (Aberdeen, SK) retrieved a puck behind the Saints net, passed in front to Nick Peluso (Rochester, NY), who then tapped over to Sawyer (Orangeville, ON) for the tap-in goal.

 Scopa and Saints goaltender Alex Scheiwiller starred in the 3rd period and overtime, neither would be beaten.

The Bandits had three shooters go in the shootout. Nathan Free and Parker Lalonde converted, while Saints forward Keifer Miller scored the lone Saints goal.

Final shots were 40-23 Brooks, who outshot Spruce Grove 14-3 in overtime.

It was the Bandits first home shootout since Jan 9, 2016 vs Drumheller, which the Bandits 5-4 on a Tristan Thompson winning goal.

The Bandits final home game of the regular season is Friday, March 29th in a rematch with the Saints. Game time is 7:00 pm at the Centennial Regional Arena.
