Bandits score eight unanswered goals in 8-1 rout of Crusaders in Game 1 of Alberta Final

SHERWOOD PARK, AB (May 10, 2024) – Ty Mason and Logan Sawyer had two goals games, as the Brooks Bandits erased a one-goal deficit and scored eight unanswered in an 8-1 blowout of the Sherwood Park Crusaders in Game 1 of the BCHL Alberta FinalĀ  on Friday at the Randy Rosen Rink.

The Bandits lead the best-of-seven series 1 game to 0, with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday in Sherwood Park.

Sherwood Park opened at 6:25 as forward Kale Dach scored on a breakaway for the only goal of the period. Brooks had to successfully kill four penalties, which included a clutch pad save from goaltender Johnny Hicks (Kamloops, BC) on Crusaders forward Hunter Price. Hicks made 22 saves total.

The Bandits tied the game just 1:17 into the 2nd period as forward Caelan Fitzpatrick (Moose Jaw, SK) carried the puck into the left wing corner and passed cross-ice to an open Sawyer (Orangeville, ON), who roofed the game-tying goal on the powerplay. Brooks took the lead at 15:40, as Mason (Weyburn, SK) scored backhand off the rush on a pass from defenceman Quinn McCall (St. John, IN) to make it 2-1. Just 14 seconds later, Mason scored again from the right circle. Forward Jordan Hughesman (Winnipeg, MB) added another goal on the powerplay at 17:38 to make it 4-1. With 40 seconds left in the period, forward Nick Peluso (Rochester, NY) cleaned up a loose puck off a Parker Lalonde (Aberdeen, SK) shot and scored backhand, shortside to make it 5-1.

Sawyer added another at 6:04 of the 3rd period to make it 6-1, after Nic DeGraves (Edmonton, AB) found him wide-open in the left circle. It didn’t take long for the Bandits to make it 7-1 at 8:00, as forward Danylo Korzhyletskyi (Kyiv, UA) beat Crusaders goaltender Erick Roest on a backhander. The final goal came at 15:20, as defenceman Hughie Hooker (Brandon, MB) scored from the slot on another pass from Lalonde.

Final shots were 42-23 Brooks, as the Bandits powerplay went 2/3 and penalty kill was 6/6.

Game 2 of the series is Saturday, May 11th in Sherwood Park, with a start time of 7:15 pm.
